Citizen Journalista goes half dark

Dear Reader,

Jane Q from Citizen Journalista here. Thanks so much for reading this blog!

While I’m developing this blog in ways that can’t be explored live on the web, I won’t be adding new blog content for a while. New paid writing gigs and a boatload of clients (both good things!) mean I have to draw some lines in the sand regarding my time management, and something has to go.

However, you can still consider my Twitter feed in the left center column as an ongoing live news feed as I parse through local/regional news to find things of interest to Islanders. So stay tuned for that, and if you like, follow me at CitizenJBI to receive my tweets directly in your own Twitter client feed.

And please, send me your info if you find something of interest to Bainbridge Islanders that I could tweet about: cjbi@myway.com. It could be general news, calendar information, city hall oversight, or special interest features you think our community would be interested in. I can’t guarantee I’ll tweet about everything that comes my way, but I’ll certainly do the best that I can!

Thanks for your support. I will be back (eventually) in full uniform as Citizen Journalista; I appreciate your patience while I’m away.

COBI plans first National Night Out to promote personal safety for families

The city of Bainbridge Island will feature a regionally recognized speaker on personal safety and crime avoidance for teens as part of the island’s first ever National Night Out for Safety next Tuesday, August 4 from 6-9pm at the Town Square behind City Hall.

“National Night Out is designed to involve local citizens in their community’s safety,” said Lt. Denise Giuntoli of the BIPD. “It gives residents a chance to get to know their public safety officers, learn how to prevent crime and drug use, strengthen their neighborhood safety nets, and send a message that the community is unified to fight crime.”

Larry Kaminer, a regionally recognized expert on personal safety and crime avoidance, will present a discussion emphasizing situational awareness, or “being aware of your surroundings and knowing who or what could be of help if something were to happen.” Kaminer’s company offer crime avoidance seminars for schools, agencies and corporations.

The family friendly event includes a police officer dunk tank, free hot dogs and Mora Ice Cream, live music, as well as personal safety presentations appropriate for teens and access to local Police, Fire, K9, Bomb Squad and Marine Safety officers. In addition, the West Sound Wildlife Shelter staff will present “Coexisting Safely with Wildlife.”

Movies in the Park starts at/with Twilight!

Can’t sleep through this heat? August brings late outdoor movies to Waterfront Park. The Downtown Association presents the popular teen vampire film, “Twilight,” tomorrow night at dusk. Bring blankets and chairs and prepare to see your neighbors! Upcoming films also include “Roman Holiday” and “The Parent Trap” (1960s version).
